Kilkea Castle build Junior section

Kilkea Castle is to be commended for its success in building a successful junior section from scratch in just 2 years! The club heard of work in other clubs through a JGI presentation and with assistance from the Regional Development Officer, Rory Leonard, set up its junior section. Juniors completed the JGI coaching programme and the Girls in Golf project while volunteers did 'JGI Leader' and child protection training.

Mitchelstown's Successful Junior Club

Mitchelstown Golf Club is to be congratulated for running a very successful summer of junior golf. Realising the club's future lay with its youth, the club set up a junior committee and with assistance from the Regional Development Officer, Jennifer Hickey, the club devised a programme that would allow juniors to start, improve and develop within golf. 80 juniors completed the JGI coaching programme with PGA professional Michael Collins followed by a series of junior activities organised by the club volunteers who became JGI trained leaders.

Birdies Special Olympics Golf Club, Craigavon

The Birdies Special Olympics Golf Club is the focus of this week's news article. Formed in 2000 with only 1 playing member it now boasts a membership of 24. Recently JGI's Ulster regional development officer, Gary Lavery, helped them out with some 'leader training'.

Shannon GC Presentation Night

Shannon Golf Club recently finished a very successful summer of junior golf. Pictured here receiving their JGI 'goody bags' and certificates are the boys who completed the coaching programme and rules test throughout the summer. Congratulations to all, especially PGA professional Artie Pyke and junior convenor Eugene Logan and his committee who were invaluable in running the coaching programme.

Irish Open 2009

Junior Golf Ireland had over 500 children go through it's facility at the 3 Irish Open in Baltray. Beginner golfers from local schools and youth groups received tips from PGA professionals throughout the week and got a chance to see Shane Lowry and others in action on the links. National Junior Golf Survey

Junior Golf Ireland has recently released findings from the National Junior Golf Survey . Commenced in Spring 2008, the survey is the most significant study on junior golf since the 2000 Junior Golf Charter, having been sent to 420 GUI and ILGU affiliated golf clubs in Ireland. Darren Clarke Scholarships

Junior Golf Ireland

JGI in conjunction with the Darren Clarke Foundation are offering membership scholarships to those who are not yet members of a golf club. If you are learning to play golf or have completed the JGI coaching programme you might be in line to receive a grant towards membership at your local club. 10 scholarships will be available in 2 categories, boys and girls 8-11 years of age and 12-16 years of age. One scholarship will be for a girl involved in the JGI 'Girls in Golf' project. Click here for more information.

Junior Development Plan

JGI is not standing still and is constantly reviewing the changes ahead and the challenges these changes may bring. JGI is working to create a seamless pathway, from first beginnings to regular participation to champion golfer. JGI looked at a particular set of issues in relation to the development of golf in Ireland and produced a Development Plan to ensure the introduction, development and sustainment of these areas from 2006-2008.
